Description
Rising from the heart of New Mexico’s Tularosa Basin is one of the world's great natural wonders - the glistening White Sands National Monument. Visible from space, the great wave-like dunes of gypsum sand have engulfed 275 square miles of desert. White Sands National Monument preserves a major portion of this unique dune field, along with the plants and animals that live there.
With the park entrance opening an hour before sunrise I found myself in the company of several other photographers trying to capture the unique view of the rising sun over the rolling dunes of white sand. I captured several views of the spectacular rising sun with many viewing angles showing the rolling dunes and struggling yucca plants enduring against the every changing sand.
This photo is one of a series of photographs showing the broad expanse of white sand dunes in front of the yellow oranges of the sunrise. The stark green palm-like narrow leaves of the Soaptree Yucca stand out in the foreground. The plant is illuminated from the rising sun along the horizon and show long shadows from the low angle of light.
