Description
Butterfly on Yellow is an art piece based on a photograph taken at the Phoenix Desert Botanical Gardens in their spring butterfly exhibit. This popular exhibit is housed in an enclosure with hundreds of butterflys that are feeding on the plants in the exhibit. Because the butterflies are compressed into a small area it is possible to capture close-up shots of many varieties.
By utilizing a long lens I was able to get very close to the subject. Most visitors to the exhibit were using point and shoot cameras and were also able to get fairly close to the butterflies. The smooth faded background in the images is called bokeh which is caused by the large shutter opening placing the background out of focus in an aesthetically pleasing manner. I then "artify" the image with software to create a painterly vision of the photo.
Too often we fail to recognize the beauty of the parks and attractions near to us. The Desert Botanical Garden has provided the source of many of my fine art images over the years. In 2002 I participated in an Arizona Highways workshop at the gardens where I had the opportunity to capture several images at dawn and then to have the photos critiqued by the award winning photographers from the magazine.
The original of this painting with gel enhancement can be purchased at my studio in the Wham Art Association in Surprise, Arizona.
