Description
Monarch Transparent is an image taken at the Phoenix Desert Botanical Gardens in their fall butterfly exhibit of 2009. This popular exhibit is housed in an enclosure with hundreds of butterfly’s that are feeding on the plants in the exhibit. Because the butterflies are compressed into a small area it is possible to capture close-up shots of many varieties.
By utilizing a long lens I was able to get very close to the subject. Most visitors to the exhibit were using point and shoot cameras and were also able to get fairly close to the butterflies. The smooth faded background in the images is called “bokeh” which is caused by the aperture placing the background out of focus in an aesthetically pleasing manner. This narrow aperture provided more of the white flower to be in focus with the green plants more blurred. The light in the enclosure was streaming from behind the butterfly making its wing appear to be transparent.
Too often we fail to recognize the beauty of in the parks and attractions near to us. The Desert Botanical Garden has provided the source of many of my fine art images over the years. In 2002 my wife and I participated in an Arizona Highways workshop at the gardens where we had the opportunity to capture several images at dawn and then to have the photos critiqued by photographers from the magazine.
