Description
I arrived at the parking area about 30 minutes before sunrise. I knew from an app on my iPad, "The Photographers Ephemeris", that the moon would be setting very near to the saddle of the iconic rock formation slightly before the sun came up. Because the scene would be dimly lit by the full moon, I had decided to shoot this series of shots in HDR mode. HDR is a photographic technique to capture a greater dynamic range between the lightest and darkest areas of an image. HDR images can represent more accurately the range of intensity levels found in real scenes, from direct sunlight to faint starlight, and is often captured by way of merging differently exposed pictures of the same subject matter.
I processed the photos in a program called Photomatix Pro that merged the frames together and adjusted the exposure levels to be arrive at the photograph you see. The great beauty of this landscape was enhanced by the pre-sunrise light on Cathedral Rock bathing the sky with a pink glow. The red rocks and the green in the foliage was intensified to gather in the early morning light.
