Artist's Description
To capture this photograph I arrived at the parking area about two hours before sunset. I knew from an app on my iPad, "The Photographers Ephemeris" that the moon would be rising very near to the saddle of the iconic rock formation slightly after sunset. Because the scene would be dimly lit by the setting sun and the full moon, I had decided to shoot this series of shots in HDR mode. HDR is a photographic technique to capture a greater dynamic range between the lightest and darkest areas of an image. HDR images can represent more accurately the range of intensity levels found in real scenes, from direct sunlight to faint starlight, and is often captured by way of merging differently exposed pictures of the same subject matter. I processed the photos in a program called Photomatix Pro that merged the multiple frames together and adjusted the exposure levels to produce the photograph you see. The great beauty of this landscape was enhanced by the setting sun light on Cathedral Rock....
